Godly vs. Ungodly

Opening Thoughts:

Before this project I understood that in many religions a believer should aim to follow certain guidelines and aspire to be pure within themselves. Even though I have been exposed to other religions, I am Muslim and for this project I wanted to increase my knowledge on different faiths. This article will show viewers

what (names of religions) say about being godly or ungoldy. The quotes below are from sources that explain different religions. I started out with a quote that talks about God's image in our country. I thought that this quote is a good introduction this page and a good summary of our unit.

Overview of ReligionsBetween Godliness and Godlessness

"He’s asking a chicken-or-egg question too seldom broached publicly in America, where religion is such sacred and protected turf, where God is on our currency and at our inaugurals and in our pledge and sometimes written into legislation as a way to exempt the worshipful from dictates that apply to everyone else. The question is this: Which comes first, the faith or the feeling of transcendence?"

Analysis ParagraphAnalysis Paragraph:
The main topic presented is centered around the ongoing battle, Faith vs. Feeling. Many can say that the spiritual feeling that overcomes a worshiper when they are exposed to a religion causes them to research the origins and historical stories of the chosen religion. Individuals also apply the lessons and values of their faith to their live(s). Spiritual feeling and faith can often be seen as equal. I questioned how this applies to my big question, how is one determined godly or ungodly? If you receive a spiritual feeling and don't act upon it or fall deeply into your faith, are you deemed ungodly? Is this viewed as ignoring and rejecting God or disobeying the Will of God?

Christianity:
"Blessed is the one

who does not walk in step with the wicked

or stand in the way that sinners take

or sit in the company of mockers,

2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

and who meditates on his law day and night.

3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither—

whatever they do prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!

They are like chaff

that the wind blows away"

Analysis Paragraph
  • The first section of Psalms 1 teaches us the choice a Christian must make, to be blessed or wicked. The phrase "Blessed is the one..." indicates that being blessed in Christianity is a choice for the believer and not something that they are born with. If their desire is to be blessed then there are conditions and rules that must be obeyed. If one does not obey these conditions then they are not blessed and deemed ungodly. A believer has to watch the company (s)he keeps. The Bible says that sitting with the wicked and taking part in actions that are ungodly will rub off on a Christian and they will lose sight of the righteous way of life. Praying and living through the Lord is apart of the righteous way of life. A blessed Christian is strong (tree) especially through the trials and tribulation of life (streams of water).

The wisdom of Kabbalah is a method for the correction of the world, correction of mankind. So essentially, we need to descend to the level of even the simplest person, because everyone must reach the correction and adhesion with the Creator, Dvekut. The whole universal Kli, that is, all the creatures, regardless of who they are or what they are. The whole of creation—still, vegetative, animate and speaking -- must reach complete adhesion with the Emanator.

Analysis Paragraph
The title alone speaks volumes. When something is emphasized or brought to light then it is a revelation. God is the major figure in all religions and is the foundation for many countries such as our own. So this article starts out by saying to readers that the idea of Godliness or how to be godly is a topic that is being showed attention. Micheal Laitman's beginning statement, "a method for the correction of the world, correction of mankind". As described in many religions, the evils/ways of the world and mankind alter worshipers. This relates to my essential of how can one be ungodly. Laitman teaches readers that when an individual follows the ways of mankind he is becoming ungodly. He then follows by telling us how we can become godly. The only way one can be godly and be corrected is by connecting with the Creator.

The Battle for God
"also cast aside many of the painfully acquired insights of liberal culture, which fight and kill in the name of religion and strive to bring the sacred into the realm of politics and national struggle."

Analysis:

The main message is that the ways and customs "evils" of the world are changing the way people practice their religions. In many religions the evils of the world influence worshipers in a bad way. These evils cause people to stray from what it is "holy". I picked this quote because it made me think, is a person declared ungodly when they follow the ways of society and don't exactly follow the ways of their religion

Final Thoughts:
After this project I am walking away with a new understanding of how being godly or ungodly in a religion can determine you life and future. I believe that others should look more into this topic and learn more information about what a believer in any religion must do if they strive to be godly.
